This is the Dog River Clearwater Revival website maintained by Dr. Mimi Fearn of the University of South Alabama in Mobile Alabama.   Some great people involved in efforts to restore and preserve this little river which flows within the heart of Mobile. The group is primary sponsor of THE DOG PADDLE.   See pictures of the 2003 event on this page, and follow links to pictures on other sites too.

National Rivers Website, the Rivers of Colorado.  Calendar of River Events.   There is room for each state to have a website showing activities which are riverbased.  It goes from races and competitions,  river rodeos, river cleanups, river festivals & rendezvous, conventions, meetings, and classes.  And there is NOT one for Alabama.  Sounds like we need to see about remedying that oversight.

Yukon River Quest..  The 4th annual Yukon River Quest Canoe Race between Whitehorse and Dawson City, Yukon, is next year, June 27th.  4 teams already registered.  2002 Rules now posted on the site.  460  miles of  racing makes this look like an Ironman effort. The site states, "It is the longest endurance marathon canoe & kayak race in the world, a total of 742 km.  Where else could you paddle 24 hours a day?"   It outclasses what we have envisioned, but it has thought of every possible issue to arise when planning/organizing a race.  A lot to learn from this one. Awesome.

When planning the first "Dog Paddle" event, everyone was surprised to find so many folks in our city who wanted to paddle around.  Mobile Alabama has many waterways perfect for an easy paddle into fairly uninhabited areas.  This page of links was created originally for people planning The Dog Paddle.  Now, it has an additional purpose:  To introduce newcomers to others interested in paddling.

We have several options for using a variety of paddle boats in the Mobile area.
Sit-on-top kayaks in the Gulf surf, very popular with local teens.
Needlenosed ocean kayaks are showing up more in Mobile Bay and the Gulf waters.
Traditional canoes. Retracing the path of naturalists of a century ago is also possible in canoes  going over the Bartram Trail now being set up by the Sierra Club with grant money, and then the mildly disturbed rivers, for those looking for a thrill suitable for beginners. I think we even have some real whitewater out there, although I haven't seen it!!

The DOG PADDLE 2003 again sponsored by DRCR & DIP Merchants Assoc, was held August 16th  at the Beachcomber Marina. The Beachcomber is at the mouth of Dog River on the south side under the bridge. It is 6 miles from I-10 south on Ala. Hwy 163  also known as Dauphin Island Parkway.
DOG PADDLE 2004 is scheduled for July 24, 2004, again at the Beachcomber Marina under Dog River Bridge. Details for entering the races or attending the family oriented event are available at the DRCR website.
