hermit land crabs
    fascinating pets for everyone
My two hermie crabs have been with me for more than two years.  Once I tried to add other crabs to the same aquarium, but the new crabs disappeared.  All were smaller than the two big guys, and they were very active.  If they  escaped over the top of the glass, I expected to find an empty shell somewhere, but never did.
If someone cannot keep  hermit crabs successfully, I recommend they try PET ROCKS or a CHIA PET,  the only two things easier that these crabs to keep happy and healthy.

Crabs nibble on the wood, cuttlebone, & mineral block.
My hermies like peeled grapes, and saltine crackers, sometimes creamy peanut butter...  They eat the crab cakes or pellets  formulated especially to meet their dietary needs.  I mist their 20 gallon aquarium every couple of days, put philodendron and ivy in it, have one end small colorful gravel and the other end aquarium sand.  They dig underneath the water dish to spend their days hidden in darkness.  I leave the glass lid of the aquarium open in the daytime, and I use a full spectrum bulb in an undercabinet light fixture to give natural light to their area.  Although they are active at night, I am a great believer in the benefits of full spectrum lighting.    At night, I close the glass cover to the aquarium to prevent them from escaping and to avoid any drafts.

No visible means of support, the clear silicone seam in corner is enough to grip even for Big Guy.
Bigger is watching me take his picture. He is very sociable.
An object in their way will be moved. Holes dug. Dishes filled with sand.
